Global Cinematography Institute - Expanded Cinematography Courses

Global Cinematography Institute

Expanded Cinematography® Course:

What is Expanded Cinematography®?

Expanded Cinematography® comes in response to the changing role of the Cinematographer / Director of Photography, and the gaps in knowledge created by ever evolving technology and modern aesthetics.

A new unity of art and technology is necessary via the conversion of existing crafts and the role of cinematography, with visual effects, virtual lighting, pre-visualization, as well as emerging visual practices. This further development of the Cinematographer’s profession, positions the DP as a Cinematographer - Artist - Designer - Technologist who is able to solve the problems created with complex imagery.

Further education is necessary to prepare and equip Cinematographers to evolve with the constant evolution of the art and craft of motion pictures, television and other new "arenas" of moving picture art.

The Global Cinematography Institute Expanded Cinematography® Sessions consist of individual programs and classes designed to continue the education and upgrade the skillset of working cinematographers and industry professionals.

Foundations in Expanded Cinematography®

Practical Lighting Workshop

As part of Lighting and Composition class, GCI Students participate in Practical Lighting Workshops on the GCI Soundstage using industry standard equipment. Each student is assigned a lighting scenario, and has 90 min to execute the setup, with a full crew of classmates! We screen the Dailies and GCI Co-Founder Yuri Neyman, ASC gives his feedback.

Other GCI classes feature Software and App tutorials, including the popular Davinci Resolve, to train Cinematographers how to create their own post-looks. HDR Environment Building in Virtual Cinematography to create photo-realistic 360 degree background plates. Green-screen lighting tutorials for shooting VFX. And more!

Learn From Working Professionals

Unlike other film school programs, all of GCI's Faculty are currently active working professionals, constantly earning achievement in their particular fields. Many teachers are active members of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), and also include Oscar-winners, Emmy-winners, Lighting & Camera Union Members, and more. In GCI you will learn what is happening now in cinematography, and not dwell in the past with antiquated lesson plans.

Two-Week Course

Each session spans roughly two consecutive weeks, with classes daily (each class day lasting approx. 6-8 hours), with two "off-days" during the course of the Session. Free time during the weekdays allow for working professionals to take the course, and gives students the opportunity to complete assignments during the day and explore Los Angeles, the center of the worldwide filmmakng industry! The two-week course model is perfect for students coming from out-of-town or internationally. Sessions are offered approximately every 1 1/2 to 2 months.

"What really separates Global Cinematography Institute from other schools and programs is the fact that 'Expanded Cinematography' was constantly put into context for its practical application."

- J.P. Brennan, Director/Cinematographer
