About the Workshop
In our upcoming session we are glad to offer a new special workshop class titled “Foundations of Director’s Profession for Cinematographers” (Collaboration with Directors) taught by Oscar-Winning Director Dean Parisot.
Dean Parisot has successfully helmed both studio and independent films. His dramatic directorial debut short "Tom Goes to the Bar," earned him the Berlin Festival's Golden Bear. He followed this with "The Appointments of Dennis Jennings," which earned the 1988 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. He has went on to direct films like “Galaxy Quest”, “Fun With Dick and Jane”, and “Red 2” among many others.

Class Description: This special workshop class created by Global Cinematography Institute and Oscar-Winning Director Dean Parisot will allow cinematographers and others who are interested to understand more about the production responsibilities of the Director in cinema, the Director’s role in preproduction, on-set and in post, as well as what a Director would like to see in and receive from one of his closet collaborators – the cinematographer.
The class will address:
1. How The Director works with the Cinematographer:
1.1 What questions will a Director ask
1.2 How do the Director and Cinematographer interact together
1.3 How should the Cinematographer approach the project
1.4 How will they capture the film from the Director's point of view
2. What is involved with prep work after being hired:
2.2 Location Scouting
2.3 Looking at references
2.4 Breaking down the script with the Director
3. What is involved with set life:
3.1 How the Director is thinking
3.2 How to work together
3.3 Getting what the Director neeeds
3.4 Shooting for Continuity
4. What is involved with Editing / Post:
4.1 Shooting for the edit
4.2 Color Correction
4.3 Working for Visual Effects
The class will be divided into two parts. The first part is a lecture by Director Dean Parisot covering the topics that are listed above. The second part of the workshop will finish on-set where Dean Parisot will play the role of Producer/ Director and students will take turns directing a small scene as well as being DP, 1st AD, UPM, etc, to learn how a director works with his team and with the DP. This will give students a better understanding of the methods of a director’s work, his modes of thinking, and leave knowing how to collaborate with director successfully.
